3 out of 5 eggsFeeds unsafe Core Volt

Pros: Mainboard is well designed with everything in right place. Plenty of updated features such as M.2, USB 3.1 and Windows 10 support. This mainboard is on par with Maximus VIII Extreme series big brother. I do not plan to Overclock any time soon.

I am using this with Intel 6700K along with Noctua NH-D14, which keeps the temps at 55c while playing high end games such as Armored Warfare or Company of Heroes 2.
Cons: So here is the really big issue with this mainboard which will degrade the Life of your CPU over time. I am using the latest BIOS 1001 along with Energy Saving features enabled. I have not overclocked this Mainboard/CPU. Problem is while playing games first core enters Turbo Mode ( 4.2GHz ) and CPU CORE Voltage get up to 1.380.

ROG Features such as Asus Core Enhancement and Core SYNC are disabled. Still Mainboard is sending unsafe Voltage to CPU when its running with TURBO.
Other Thoughts: Also Offset Voltage Does not seems to affect the Core Voltage. When System is left idle for 5min the Core Voltage drops 0.710
     Manufacturer Response:
    Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for posting this informative review. It’s unfortunate that you’re CPU Vcore on turbo mode doesn’t meet your expectations. Have you tried manually setting your CPU voltage override to a more acceptable voltage? Did you get these same issues with the previous BIOS version installed? Have you tried rolling back to BIOS Version (0902) to check if that fixes adaptive voltage settings? I will make sure to let the related department know about your issues for future improvements in regards to the usage of the CPU’s v core on your Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard. Feel free to contact me at cl-nestor@asus.com and I would be glad to help with any technical questions. Please use this number N151091020 as reference to this case.

    Thank you for choosing ASUS!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Motherboard

Pros: The BIOS has a ton of options for people who want to tweak like crazy. Build went smooth and I did not run into any major issues.
    Cons: None at this time

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product!

Pros: Simple setup and high product quality. The UEFI/BIOS is easy to navigate and reliable. The aesthetics are top notch.
Cons: Downloads need some updating... ASUS has newer driver versions on the Z170-Pro which was just released.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Great!

    Pros: Easy setup, reliable performance.
Cons: Why does it still say "Update Succesfully" after updating? ASUS has used that message following a BIOS update for years. It is either "Updated Successfully" or "Update successful". ASUS needs to do a better job maintaining the downloads. The Intel Graphics driver is STILL a beta version for Windows 10 (beta status in release notes and installer). Some "signature" boards have updated Management Engine and Rapid Storage drivers.
Other Thoughts: Windows 10 worries me. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 actually seem more stable. I don't understand why Windows 10 insists on progress bars that aren't related to actual progress. Why does Windows 10 update say "preparing installation" when it is actually installing updates? Why is activation so messed up? My current install says "Connect to internet to activate" in the activation menu but I am obviously online right now. Horrid programming skills.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus ROG Maximus VIII Hero

Pros: This board is awesome! I came from a Z97 MSI mobo and this one knocked it straight the **** out! Be sure to update the bios before installing an OS. The onboard sound is great, it's way better than any other onboard sound I've EVER had.
Cons: Doesn't have more onboard USB 3.0
Doesn't call into work for me

I was having an issue with my screen saver not coming on. I did some research and found out it was my Logitech 3D Pro that was causing it.
Other Thoughts: Before you badmouth this board, make sure all your drivers are up to date by going to ASUS website.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible BIOS!

Pros: The board, when it boots, runs smoothly. The BIOS is nice to work with with many options. Also, the memory test and the added codes is nice to see, but that is about all that is good.
Cons: The BIOS software is awful with auto overclocking. I had turned it on and set it to be for water cooling and the specs were right except the voltage and ram settings were way off. The computer was not stable. I had to do all the settings manually.

Also, the first board I got was DOA! Code 55 Memory Not Installed. I tried to re-seat the cpu, loosing the pegs for the water cooling, each stick 1 at a time in each slot. Nothing. The second board I got after RMA boots, but the A1 DIMM slot will cause it to not boot. I either get stuck on code 55 or code 41. I can swap out any of the RAM sticks in any order and boots, but only with 3 of the 4 sticks. I might have to RMA again.

Another issue with this board is that the software will not separate read and front audio ports. When enable, it shows it is, but only the rear plays on both speaker and headphones at the same time. I tried all the versions of the audio drivers for the Realtek and this board, but nothing will fix it.
Other Thoughts: If you plan to use only 2 or 3 DIMM slots, then this might be an OK board for you. But, I recommend going with another company other than ASUS since after weeks of researching and reading through forums, it seems to be only ASUS has problems on the Z710 chipset.
     Manufacturer Response:
    Dear Valued ASUS Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Here at ASUS we take all customer feedback into careful consideration. It's unfortunate to hear that our ASUS Motherboard BIOS does not meet your expectations. What version of BIOS are you running? Have you updated the BIOS to the latest revision? I will make sure to forward this to the related department in regards to quality control with our MAXIMUS VIII HERO motherboards so we we can avoid the same issues and improve for the future. Please note, I can assist you with a RMA if needed. If you seek technical advice or have any questions, you can reach me at cl-nestor@asus.com. Your reference number to this case is N151084964.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Z170 board, all necessary features without the fluff.

Pros: I care a lot about packaging and presentation and ASUS feeds that preference with amazing protective packaging by using a sturdy flip top box, double "tray" inserts (one for board one for accessories), and a handle.

The product itself is sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. It matches G.Skill Trident Z memory perfectly.

Regarding features: I prefer motherboards that closely match the design specification of the chipset. I find boards with PLX chips, which the Maximus VIII Hero does not have, less reliable, laggy in SLI, and lower performing because of "fraud" switching used to pretend additional PCIe lanes exist. That makes the Maximus VIII Hero a perfect fit.

Regarding performance: I found setup to be incredibly simple. I installed the CPU, memory, connected cables and powered on. All I did was set XMP and the board ran smoothly without issue. I found overclocking wonderful and the temps of the i7-6700K @ 4500MHz a major improvement over the i7-4790K.

UEFI/BIOS and OS installation: The BIOS is easy to navigate and reliable. Updating can be done many ways with emergency recovery possible by USB. I have installed Windows 7 for stability testing as well as Windows 10 and Fedora. All installed smoothly and passed 24+ hours of stability testing.
Cons: Bundled bloatware is a con. ASUS is primarily a hardware company and their software has always been dodgy. I haven't used anything on the DVD since X58. I did use the Windows 7 tool that slips USB3.0 drivers into your Windows 7 installation files since that is required for installation on Z170 (worked perfectly). It looks like other users play around with that bloatware but have problems with it and that is unfortunate.

Support: I have owned over a dozen ASUS boards and experienced one partial failure of a Z77 board (2 bad USB ports). Support is staggeringly bad and RMA is worse. ASUS' build quality is just too high and I accept the possible risk.
Other Thoughts: I worry system building is a fading art. I read some of these other comments and so many smell of problems in the chair or lack of understanding. Many do not even understand the memory controller is on the CPU now and you can only run memory the CPU can handle. Intel says 2133 DDR4 is specification. The motherboard can support up to 3800 but that doesn't mean the CPU can, it depends on voltages and the specific CPU. If you just buy the fastest you can, install it, it will boot at SPD/JEDEC timings. You can't always just apply the max memory frequency/timings and expect it to boot. I went with DDR4 3000, since the QVL has a note on all higher frequencies warning that all CPUs may not run 3200 or higher. That tells me ASUS' believes all CPUs can comfortably and reliably run 3000.

2 out of 5 eggsI want to believe...

Pros: Great looks, great features, wish I could actually see it work firsthand
Cons: Second DOA motherboard. Q-code 00 haunts me still. I wonder if something happened in shipping or what, it looks like the anti-static bag was punctured in several places, the motherboard box has a really strange chunk taken out of it where the motherboard rests. (only on one side, not through the whole box) It doesn't even look like a new box, no seal stickers and it sat in its box upside down. The shipping box Newegg put it in looks like it was stabbed and dropped kicked to my door. Since it is largely unprotected (4 bubble bags just on the top), I would hazard a guess that it took one to many drop kicks.
Other Thoughts: Help me Obi-Asus-Kenobi, you're my only hope....

I will update as I work through another RMA
     Manufacturer Response:
    Dear Valued Customer Jessica S,

Thank you for reaching out and providing this informative feedback. It is unfortunate to hear that your second board is still having issues the 00 Q-code errors. Are both your 24 and 8 pin power cables connected to the Motherboard? Do you have a dedicated VGA (Graphics) Card installed? What kind of power supply do you have? Please give me more details on your hardware so I can further assist you with any issues you may have. Please feel free to contact me at any time. My email is cl-nestor@asus.com. I would be more than glad to assist you with any technical questions or inquiries. Please use N151058546 in your e-mail for quick reference to this case.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard

Pros: Great motherboard. Has everything what I'm looking for in a board. I like the fact the M.2 slot doesn't share PCIe lanes/SATA ports so you can use it without losing anything.
Cons: A little slow to boot. Maybe a future BIOS update will fix this.

    More LEDs!! :-)

    Great for overclocking
CPU installation tool helps protect your socket
Very nice BIOS/UEFI (see cons though)
